Types of salts and their solubilities

There are broadly five main types of simple salts:normal salts, basic salts, hydrated salts and double salts. Generally, inorganic salts are solid at room temperature.

1.In a normal salt, all the ionizable hydrogen atoms in the acid have been replaced by a metal or ammonium ion;NaCl, K2SO4 and NH4SO4.

2.All acid salts, the ionizable hydrogen atoms in the acid have been replaced partially by a metal or ammonium ion .e.g NaHCO3,KHS and NaHSO4.
All acid salts ionize in water to produce hydrogen ions.

3.A basic salt has one or more hydrogen ions.

4.A hydrated salt contact water of crystallization.E.g Na2CO3.10H2O.

5.A double salt is formed when two normal salts crystallize together to form a single salt.e.g Alum: K2SO4.Al2(SO)4.

Solubility Rules
1.All odium, potassium and ammonium salts are soluble in water.

2.All acid salts are soluble in water.

3.All trioxonitrate V salts are soluble in water.

4.All trioxonitrate IV salts are insoluble, except those of sodium, potassium and ammonium salts that are soluble in water.

5.All trioxocarbonate (IV) salts are insoluble except those of sodium,
potassium and ammonium salts that are soluble in water.

6.All sulphides are insoluble except those of sodium, potassium, ammonium, calcium and magnesium that are water soluble
